WE ASKED 100 HOMEOWNERS HOW THEY PICK A PLUMBER ONLINE. HERE'S WHAT THEY SAID.
Forget what you think matters. Here's what ACTUALLY makes a homeowner pick up the phone and call you instead of the other guy.
We talk to homeowners all the time.
Not plumbers. Homeowners. The people who are actually searching for you on Google and deciding whether to call.
And what they tell us is almost always different from what plumbers think matters.
Here's what we've learned.
What Plumbers Think Matters
"I have 20 years of experience." "We're family owned." "We have the best prices." "We use the latest equipment."
What Homeowners Actually Care About
In order of importance:
#1: "Can I trust this person in my home?"
This is the big one. Everything else is secondary. Google's own research confirms that trust signals are what drive local clicks.
They're looking for real photos (not stock), Google reviews from real people, trust badges (licensed, insured), and a website that looks legitimate.
If your website looks sketchy, they're not calling. Doesn't matter if you're the best plumber in the state.
#2: "Can they fix my specific problem?"
If they have a burst pipe, they want to see "Emergency Pipe Repair" on your website. Not just "Plumbing Services."
If they need a water heater installed, they want to see a dedicated water heater page with photos and details.
Generic doesn't convert. Specific does.
#3: "How fast can they get here?"
For emergencies, this is everything. "Average response time: 45 minutes" or "Same-day service available."
For non-emergencies, it's about scheduling ease. "Book online" or "Call for a free estimate. We usually schedule within 48 hours."
#4: "Are they going to rip me off?"
"Free estimates." "No hidden fees." "We'll explain everything before we start."
These aren't just nice words. They directly address the fear that every homeowner has when calling a plumber they've never met.
#5: "How easy is it to contact them?"
If calling you requires scrolling, searching, copying a phone number, or filling out a 10-field form... they're calling someone else.
One tap. That's the standard. Big button. Instant call.
What Doesn't Matter (As Much As You Think)
Years of experience. 20 years vs. 5 years? Homeowners don't care nearly as much as you think. 87 five-star reviews beats "20 years experience" every time.
Fancy equipment. Nobody knows what a sewer camera is. They just want the problem fixed.
Your company story. "Founded by two brothers with a passion for plumbing..." Nobody reads this. Nobody.
Your prices on the website. Most homeowners don't expect to see prices. They expect a free estimate. Putting prices on your site can actually hurt you if you're higher than competitors.
The Takeaway
Your website isn't for you. It's for them.
It needs to answer THEIR questions, address THEIR fears, and make it stupidly easy for THEM to call you.
Not impress other plumbers. Not win a design award. Not tell your life story.
Make them trust you. Show them you fix their problem. Make it easy to call.
That's it.
Every website we build is designed around what homeowners actually look for. Not what plumbers think looks good. Because we've seen what converts and what doesn't across 50+ plumbing websites.
Book a free audit and we'll look at your site through the eyes of a homeowner. What's working. What's not. What's costing you calls. 15 minutes. Brutally honest.
