CASE STUDY: ATLANTA PLUMBER BOOKS $18K IN JOBS FROM HIS WEBSITE IN MONTH ONE

Derek was skeptical about investing in a real website. Then he booked $18,000 in jobs from it in the first 30 days. Here's exactly what happened.

Derek didn't believe in websites.

"I've been plumbing in Atlanta for 11 years," he told me on our first call. "Never needed a website. Word of mouth keeps me busy enough."

And he wasn't wrong. Derek was doing okay. He was booking 3-4 jobs a week. Mostly referrals. Some repeat customers. Enough to keep the lights on and pay his two guys.

But "enough to keep the lights on" and "thriving" are two different things.

Derek's wife was the one who called us. She'd been telling him for years he needed a website. He kept brushing it off. Then she got tired of waiting and made the call herself.

smart woman

"Just do the free audit," she told him. "If it looks like BS, you can tell them to get lost."

He agreed. We did the audit. What we found got his attention.

The "Before" Picture

Derek had no website. He had a Google Business Profile that was set up but barely optimized. A few reviews (12 total). No photos. No posts. No service areas listed beyond "Atlanta."

His entire online presence was basically a pinpoint on Google Maps that said "Derek's Plumbing" with a phone number.

When we showed him what happened when someone googled "plumber near me" in his part of Atlanta (East Atlanta, Decatur, Avondale Estates area), here's what came up:

  1. 3 competitors in the Map Pack with full profiles, 80+ reviews, and photos
  2. 10 organic results, none of which were Derek
  3. His Google listing was buried on page 3 of the local results

"People in your area ARE searching for plumbers online," we told him. "About 1,200 searches per month for plumber-related terms in your service area. And right now, every single one of those searchers is finding your competitors. Not you."

That got his attention.

What We Built

We built Derek's website in 6 days. Here's exactly what it included:

Homepage: Bold headline ("Atlanta's Most Reliable Plumber. On Time. Every Time."), his actual team photo, a tap-to-call button, a 3-field contact form, and a trust bar showing his 11 years of experience, license info, and Google rating.

6 service pages: - Drain Cleaning - Water Heater Repair & Installation - Sewer Line Services - Leak Detection & Repair - Bathroom Plumbing - Emergency Plumbing (24/7)

Each one with detailed descriptions, pricing ranges, FAQs, and a CTA.

5 service area pages: - East Atlanta - Decatur - Avondale Estates - Kirkwood - Grant Park

Each one with unique local content, neighborhood-specific info, and reviews from customers in that area.

A reviews page: Showcasing his best Google reviews with direct links to leave new ones.

A contact page: With form, phone, text option, map, and business hours.

We also: - Optimized his Google Business Profile fully (see our GBP guide for plumbers for the full checklist) - Set up automated review requests after every job - Connected the contact form to instant text notifications on his phone - Added schema markup for local business, services, and reviews

Month One: The Numbers

We launched Derek's website on a Tuesday. By Friday, he had his first website lead.

Here's how month one played out:

Week 1: - 3 form submissions - 2 phone calls from the website - 1 job booked ($350 drain cleaning)

Week 2: - 5 form submissions - 4 phone calls - 3 jobs booked ($2,800 total, including a $1,800 water heater installation)

things are picking up

Week 3: - 7 form submissions - 6 phone calls - 5 jobs booked ($6,200 total, including a $3,500 sewer line repair)

Week 4: - 8 form submissions - 5 phone calls - 4 jobs booked ($7,650 total)

Month 1 totals: - 23 form submissions - 17 phone calls from the website - 13 booked jobs - $18,000 in revenue from website leads - $0 spent on advertising

Read that last line again. Zero ad spend. All organic traffic and Google Maps.

Where the Leads Came From

We tracked every lead source. Here's the breakdown:

  1. Google Maps (Map Pack): 58% of leads
  2. Organic search results: 27% of leads
  3. Direct (typed URL or bookmarks): 15% of leads

The Map Pack was the biggest driver. Within 2 weeks of optimizing Derek's Google profile and launching the website, he cracked into the Map Pack for "plumber East Atlanta" and "plumber Decatur."

That Map Pack positioning alone was generating 2-3 calls per week. From people who had never heard of Derek before. Who found him purely because Google put him in front of them.

The organic traffic came mostly from his service area pages. "Plumber Avondale Estates" and "drain cleaning Decatur" were already ranking on page 1 by week 3. Low-competition keywords that nobody else was targeting.

The Phone Call That Changed His Mind

Derek told me about one specific call that shifted his perspective forever.

"This lady in Grant Park called me on a Saturday morning. Water heater died. She found me on Google, saw my reviews, and called. I had the new water heater installed by noon. $2,200 job."

He paused.

"That job paid for the entire website. In one call. On day 12."

And that's the math that makes skeptics into believers. One good job. That's all it takes to pay for a website that generates leads for years.

Three Months Later

By month 3, here's where Derek's numbers landed:

  1. Monthly website visitors: 680 (all organic)
  2. Monthly leads: 32 (form + phone)
  3. Monthly booked jobs from website: 18
  4. Monthly revenue from website leads: ~$24,000
  5. Google reviews: Went from 12 to 38 (thanks to automated review requests)
  6. Map Pack rankings: Top 3 for 8 local search terms

Derek hired a third technician. He's turning down jobs he doesn't want to do (goodbye, 2am calls for running toilets). He's cherry-picking the higher-value work.

"I went from hoping the phone would ring to telling people I'm booked next week," he said. "That's a completely different feeling."

What Made This Work So Fast

A few factors made Derek's results faster than average:

1. Low competition in his specific neighborhoods. East Atlanta, Avondale Estates, Kirkwood... these aren't downtown Atlanta. There's less competition for these hyper-local terms. Targeting neighborhoods instead of the whole metro area was the key.

2. He already had a Google Business Profile. It was under-optimized, but it existed and had some reviews. We didn't have to start from absolute zero.

3. He's genuinely great at his job. When leads called, he answered fast, showed up on time, and did quality work. That closed the deal. The website got the phone to ring. Derek closed the jobs.

4. He immediately started requesting reviews. Going from 12 to 38 reviews in 3 months boosted his Map Pack ranking significantly.

The Lesson

Derek spent 11 years thinking he didn't need a website. And for a while, he was right. Word of mouth was enough.

But the world changed. Customers changed. Now they google before they call. Even referrals google you to check you out before picking up the phone.

Derek's word-of-mouth leads actually increased after the website launched. Why? Because when someone said "Call Derek," the new customer could google him, see the website, read the reviews, and feel confident calling. The website made the referral stick.

A good website doesn't replace word of mouth. It supercharges it. We wrote more about this in how plumbers get customers without word of mouth.

Your Turn

Derek was skeptical. His wife made him take the call. He took a chance. And he booked $18K in his first month.

P.S. Derek's wife still brings up the website thing. "I told you so" is apparently her favorite phrase now. But Derek doesn't mind. He's too busy booking $24K months to argue. Sometimes the best business decisions come from the person who knows you best finally getting fed up and making the call for you.
