CHOOSING THE RIGHT GOOGLE BUSINESS CATEGORIES FOR YOUR PLUMBING COMPANY

Most plumbers pick one Google Business category and call it a day. That's a mistake costing you map pack visibility. Here's exactly which categories to choose.

Pop quiz.

What's the #1 factor that determines whether your plumbing business shows up in the Google Map Pack?

It's not reviews. It's not your website. It's not how many years you've been in business.

It's your Google Business Profile categories.

And most plumbers get this completely wrong.

They set up their profile, pick "Plumber" as their category, and move on. One category. Done. Back to work.

That's like showing up to a job with one wrench and hoping it fits every pipe.

spoiler: it won't

Why Categories Matter So Much

Google uses your business categories to decide which searches to show you for.

If your only category is "Plumber," Google knows you're a plumber. Great. But it doesn't know you do water heater installation. And without the right categories, your Google Business Profile is working at half capacity. Or drain cleaning. Or gas line repair.

So when someone searches "water heater installation near me," Google shows the businesses that have "Water Heater Installation Service" as a category. You're not one of them. You don't show up.

You just lost a $1,500 water heater job because of a dropdown menu you ignored 3 years ago.

That hurts, right? It should.

The Categories You Need to Set Up

Google lets you pick one primary category and up to 9 additional categories. Most plumbers use 1 or 2. You should be using 5 to 8.

Here's the list. If you're a residential plumber, you should have ALL of these that apply to your services:

Primary category: - Plumber

Additional categories (pick all that apply): - Water Heater Installation Service - Water Heater Repair Service - Drain Cleaning Service - Sewer Service - Gas Installation Service - Bathroom Remodeler (if you do bathroom plumbing remodels) - Water Softening Equipment Supplier (if you sell/install water softeners) - Water Purification Company (if you do filtration systems) - Emergency Plumber (if available in your region)

That's it. That's the list. It takes 5 minutes to update.

Five minutes of work that could show you up for dozens of new searches every month.

How to Update Your Categories (Step by Step)

This is so simple it's almost embarrassing.

  1. Go to Google Business Profile and sign in
  2. Click on your business profile
  3. Click "Edit profile"
  4. Click "Business category"
  5. Your primary category should be "Plumber"
  6. Click "Add another category" and add each relevant category from the list above
  7. Hit "Save"

Done. Three minutes. Maybe four if you type slow.

don't overthink this

The Mistake That Kills Your Visibility

Here's the big one. Do NOT add categories for services you don't actually offer.

If you don't do gas line work, don't add "Gas Installation Service." Google checks. And if someone calls you asking about gas line work and you say "we don't do that," you'll start getting negative signals.

Only add categories for services you actively provide. Be honest. Google rewards honesty with visibility.

The other mistake? Using super broad categories when specific ones exist.

"Home Improvement" is a category. But it's useless for a plumber. It's too vague. Google doesn't know what to do with it. Stick to plumbing-specific categories.

What Happens After You Update

We've seen this play out dozens of times. Here's a typical result.

A plumber in Raleigh had one category: "Plumber." He was showing up in the map pack for "plumber near me" but nothing else.

We added 5 additional categories: Water Heater Installation Service, Drain Cleaning Service, Sewer Service, Water Heater Repair Service, and Gas Installation Service.

Within 6 weeks:

  1. He started appearing in map results for "water heater installation Raleigh"
  2. He started showing up for "drain cleaning near me"
  3. His Google Business Profile views went from 1,800/month to 3,400/month
  4. He booked 7 additional jobs that month directly from Google Maps calls

Seven jobs. From a 5-minute settings change.

That's the kind of ROI that makes you wanna buy someone a beer.

Your Primary Category Matters Most

Your primary category carries the most weight. For 95% of plumbers, this should be "Plumber." Period.

The only exception is if you're a highly specialized business. Like if you ONLY do water heater work and nothing else. Then "Water Heater Installation Service" might be your primary.

But if you're a general plumbing company, "Plumber" is your primary. Everything else is additional.

Don't get cute with this. I've seen plumbers set their primary to "Bathroom Remodeler" because they thought it would help them rank for remodeling searches. It backfired. They stopped showing up for basic plumber searches entirely.

Your primary category is your identity to Google. Make it count.

Bonus: Check Your Competitors' Categories

Want a cheat code? Look at what your top competitors are using.

  1. Google "plumber near me" in your service area
  2. Click on the top 3 results in the map pack
  3. Look at their Google Business Profile
  4. Note which categories they're using

If they have categories you don't, that's probably why they're outranking you for certain searches.

You don't need to copy them exactly. But you should make sure you're not missing any obvious ones.
