WE SURVEYED HOMEOWNERS. HERE'S WHAT THEY HATE ABOUT PLUMBING WEBSITES.
We asked real homeowners what makes them click away from a plumber's website. The answers should scare you.
Dear Plumber,
We did something kinda wild.
We surveyed 200+ homeowners and asked them one simple question:
"When you're looking for a plumber online, what makes you leave a website and move on to the next one?"
The answers were brutal. Honest. And incredibly useful if you actually want your website to work.
Let's get into it.
#1: "I Couldn't Find the Phone Number"
This was the number one complaint. By a landslide.
68% of respondents said they've left a plumbing website because the phone number was either buried, too small, or missing entirely.
Think about that. Someone has a burst pipe. Water's spraying everywhere. They Google "emergency plumber near me." They click your site. And they can't figure out how to call you.
So they hit the back button and call the next guy.
somebody please make it stop
Your phone number needs to be:
- In the top right corner of every single page
- Big enough to read without squinting
- Clickable on mobile (tap to call)
- In the footer too (people scroll, believe it or not)
#2: "The Site Looked Outdated"
47% of homeowners said they judge a plumber's quality based on how their website looks.
Is that fair? No. You might be the best damn plumber in three counties. But if your website looks like it was built in 2009, people assume your business is stuck in 2009 too.
Cracked stock photos. Comic Sans font. A visitor counter at the bottom. Clip art. actual clip art.
These things scream, "I don't care about my business enough to invest in it."
And if you don't care about your business... why should they trust you with their home?
#3: "No Reviews or Testimonials"
41% said they won't even consider a plumber whose website doesn't show reviews.
Not just a link to Google reviews. Actual testimonials on the site. With names. With details. With specific jobs mentioned.
"John fixed our water heater in 2 hours on a Sunday. Fair price, clean work, showed up when he said he would."
That's the stuff that makes people pick up the phone.
No reviews = no trust = no call.
#4: "I Had No Idea What Services They Offer"
38% said they left because the website was vague about what the plumber actually does.
"We handle all your plumbing needs" tells them nothing.
Do you do water heater installation? Sewer line repair? Gas line work? Emergency calls at 2am?
Be specific. List every service. Give each one its own section or page. Homeowners are searching for specific problems. If they can't confirm you solve their specific problem, they'll find someone who makes it clear.
#5: "It Was Slow and Clunky"
34% complained about slow-loading websites. And 29% specifically mentioned sites that were hard to use on their phone.
Here's a stat that'll keep you up at night. 80% of "plumber near me" searches happen on mobile. If your site isn't fast and easy to use on a phone, you're invisible to 4 out of 5 potential customers. Test your site at PageSpeed Insights and read our guide on mobile-first design.
#6: "No Pricing Information Whatsoever"
31% said they want at least some pricing guidance before calling.
Now look, I know. Plumbing pricing is complicated. Every job is different. You can't quote a sewer line replacement without seeing the property.
But you CAN say things like:
- "Drain cleaning starts at $150"
- "Water heater installation typically runs $800 to $2,500 depending on type"
- "We offer free estimates on all major jobs"
Giving ranges shows transparency. It builds trust. And it pre-qualifies leads so you're not wasting time on people who can't afford your services anyway.
#7: "Stock Photos of Models Pretending to Be Plumbers"
This one made us laugh. But 27% specifically called out fake stock photos.
You know the ones. The guy in a perfectly clean uniform with a wrench, smiling at the camera like he just walked off a toothpaste commercial.
Homeowners aren't dumb. They can spot a stock photo from a mile away. And it makes them wonder... if the photos are fake, what else is fake?
Use real photos. Of your real team. Your real trucks. Your real work. Even if they're not professional quality. Authenticity wins every time. Read more on real photos vs. stock photos.
#8: "No Service Area Listed"
23% said they left because they couldn't figure out if the plumber served their area.
You'd be amazed how many plumbing websites don't list their service area anywhere. The homeowner has no idea if you're local or three cities away.
List every city, town, and neighborhood you serve. Put it in the footer. Put it on a dedicated service area page. It's good for SEO too.
The Bottom Line
Homeowners aren't complicated. They want:
- To find your phone number instantly
- To see a modern, professional-looking site
- To read real reviews from real customers
- To know what you do and where you do it
- To have the page load fast on their phone
That's it. That's the whole list.
And yet... most plumbing websites fail at 3 or more of these.
Is yours one of them?
