THE Q&A SECTION ON YOUR GOOGLE PROFILE IS A MESS. LET'S CLEAN IT UP.
The Q&A section on your Google Business Profile is wide open for anyone to answer. Competitors, trolls, confused customers. Here's how to take control of it.
Pop quiz.
Do you know there's a Q&A section on your Google Business Profile?
Most plumbers don't. And that's a problem. Because while you're not paying attention, random people are asking questions about your business... and even more random people are answering them.
Sometimes incorrectly.
Sometimes it's a competitor.
yeah, that happens
What Is the Google Business Profile Q&A Section?
If you Google your own business and look at your listing, you'll see a section that says "Questions & answers." Anyone with a Google account can ask a question about your business. And here's the fun part... anyone can answer it too.
Not just you. Anyone.
That means a competitor could answer "Do they offer free estimates?" with "No, they charge a trip fee." Even if that's not true. And that answer sits there on your profile until you do something about it.
Or a confused person might answer a question wrong because they mixed you up with another plumber.
Or the question just sits there unanswered for months, making your business look like nobody's home.
All of these are bad. All of them are happening right now to plumbers who don't know this feature exists.
Why This Section Matters More Than You Think
Here are the facts:
- Google Q&A answers appear directly in search results. When someone googles your business, the Q&A section shows up right there. Before they even click on your website.
- 88% of consumers trust online information as much as personal recommendations. If a Q&A answer says you're expensive or unreliable, that's what they believe.
- Unanswered questions make you look inactive. If someone asked "Do you do tankless water heater installation?" three months ago and there's no answer, what does that say about your business?
This is free real estate on Google. And you're letting strangers camp on it.
Step 1: Check Your Current Q&A Section
Google your business name right now. Look at your listing. Click on "Questions & answers" (or "See all questions").
What do you see?
If there are questions with no answers... fix that right now.
If there are answers from people who aren't you... check if they're accurate. If they're wrong, flag them for removal and post the correct answer yourself.
If there are no questions at all... keep reading. We're gonna fix that too.
Step 2: Seed Your Own Questions
This is the move nobody tells you about.
You can ask AND answer your own questions. Google allows it. It's not gaming the system. It's proactive customer service.
Think about the questions you hear from customers every single day:
- "Do you offer free estimates?"
- "What areas do you serve?"
- "Are you available on weekends?"
- "Do you handle emergency calls?"
- "Are you licensed and insured?"
- "Do you offer financing?"
- "How fast can you get here?"
Ask these questions on your own Google profile, then answer them yourself. Thoroughly and helpfully.
Here's an example:
Question: "Do you offer free estimates for plumbing work?"
Your Answer: "Yes! We offer free estimates for all plumbing services including drain cleaning, water heater installation, sewer line repair, and more. Just give us a call at (555) 123-4567 or fill out the form on our website at yoursite.com. We typically respond within 30 minutes."
See what happened there? You answered the question, listed your services (great for SEO), included your phone number, and drove them to your website. All in one answer.

Step 3: Set Up Alerts
Google doesn't send you notifications when someone asks a question on your profile by default. Which means questions can sit there unanswered for weeks or months.
You need to check your Q&A section at least once a week. Set a recurring reminder on your phone. Every Monday morning, Google your business, check for new questions, answer them promptly.
Better yet, have your website company (hi, that's us) monitor this for you.
Step 4: Upvote Your Best Answers
Google sorts Q&A by the most "upvoted" answers. If you answer a question, ask a few friends, family members, or loyal customers to upvote your answer. This pushes your official answer to the top and buries any incorrect answers from randos.
It takes 2 seconds. And it ensures the right information is what people see first.
Step 5: Use Keywords Naturally in Your Answers
When you answer questions on your Google profile, use your keywords naturally.
Instead of "Yes, we do." try "Yes, we provide 24/7 emergency plumbing services in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, including burst pipe repair, water heater replacement, and sewer line emergencies."
Google indexes this content. These answers can show up in search results. They contribute to your local SEO signals. Don't waste them with one-word responses.
Common Q&A Disasters I've Seen
The competitor sabotage. A plumber in Phoenix had a Q&A answer from a competitor's employee saying "They're overpriced, try [competitor name] instead." It sat there for 4 months before anyone noticed. Flag these immediately.
The wrong answer from a "helpful" stranger. Someone asked "Do you do gas line work?" A random person answered "No." The plumber absolutely did gas line work. He just didn't know the answer was there.
The embarrassing question. "Why was your plumber rude to my wife?" Sitting there unanswered for 6 months. Even if the question is unfair, ignoring it looks worse than addressing it professionally.
The dead profile. Five questions, zero answers, all from 8+ months ago. This screams "this business doesn't care" to anyone looking.
The 15-Minute Fix
Here's your action plan. It takes 15 minutes:
- Google your business right now. Check your Q&A section.
- Answer any unanswered questions. Thoroughly and with keywords.
- Flag any incorrect or suspicious answers for removal.
- Seed 5-10 common questions and answer them yourself.
- Set a weekly reminder to check for new questions.
That's it. 15 minutes now. 2 minutes a week going forward. And you've locked down a section of your Google profile that most plumbers don't even know exists.

P.S. Go Google your business right now. Seriously, right now. Look at the Q&A section. If there's a single unanswered question... or worse, an answer from someone who isn't you... you've got a problem that takes about 5 minutes to fix. But every day you leave it? That's another potential customer reading the wrong answer about your business.
