7 SEO MISTAKES THAT ARE BURYING YOUR PLUMBING WEBSITE ON PAGE 5

Your plumbing website is nowhere to be found on Google. Here are the 7 SEO mistakes you're probably making and exactly how to fix each one.

You built a website. You paid good money for it. Maybe even got some fancy graphics.

And then... nothing.

No calls. No leads. No new customers finding you on Google.

You search "plumber near me" and you're on page 5. Right between a plumber who retired in 2019 and a Yelp listing from another state.

somebody please make it stop

Here's the thing. It's probably not your website's fault. It's what's happening (or not happening) behind the scenes that's killing your rankings.

Let me walk you through the 7 most common SEO mistakes I see plumbing websites make. We've fixed these for 50+ plumbing businesses, and the results are always the same. More visibility. More calls. More money.

Mistake #1: You Have One Page for Everything

This is the big one.

Your entire website is basically a homepage with your phone number, a list of services in a bullet list, and a stock photo of a wrench.

Google doesn't know what to rank you for because you haven't given it specific pages to rank.

The fix? Create a separate page for every service you offer:

  1. Drain cleaning
  2. Water heater installation
  3. Sewer line repair
  4. Leak detection
  5. Garbage disposal replacement

Each page should be 300 to 800 words of unique content that talks about that specific service in your specific area.

One page per service. One page per city. That's how you show up in more searches. We explain how to build service area pages that rank in another guide.

Mistake #2: Your Google Business Profile Is Half Empty

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is arguably more important than your website for local search.

And yet, most plumbers fill out maybe 40% of it and call it a day.

Here's what a complete GBP looks like:

  1. Correct business name (no keyword stuffing)
  2. Accurate address and service area
  3. Phone number that matches your website
  4. Business hours (including after-hours availability)
  5. At least 20 photos (truck, team, jobs, before/after)
  6. All service categories filled out
  7. Regular posts (at least weekly)
  8. Responses to every single review

If your GBP is missing any of those, you're handing rankings to your competitors. On a silver platter.

Mistake #3: Your NAP Is Inconsistent

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number.

And it needs to be exactly the same everywhere it appears online. Your website. Google. Yelp. Facebook. Angi. HomeAdvisor. The BBB.

If your website says "Bob's Plumbing LLC" but your Google listing says "Bobs Plumbing" and Yelp says "Bob Smith Plumbing"... Google gets confused.

And when Google gets confused, it doesn't rank you. It ranks the other guy whose info is consistent everywhere.

This is boring stuff. I know. But it's the boring stuff that gets you ranked.

Mistake #4: Your Website Loads Like It's on Dial-Up

Pull up your website on your phone right now.

Count to three.

Is it fully loaded? Can you see everything? Can you tap the call button?

If not, you've got a speed problem. And Google cares about speed. A lot.

Here's why: 53% of mobile visitors leave a site that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. And Google knows this. So they penalize slow sites.

Common speed killers on plumbing websites:

  1. Giant uncompressed images (that hero photo of your truck doesn't need to be 4MB)
  2. Cheap hosting (you get what you pay for)
  3. Too many plugins (looking at you, WordPress sites with 47 plugins)
  4. No caching (making the server rebuild the page every single time)

Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights right now. Anything below 50 on mobile? That's a problem.

Mistake #5: You Have Zero Backlinks

Backlinks are when other websites link to your website. Think of them as votes of confidence.

The more quality websites linking to you, the more Google trusts you. The more Google trusts you, the higher you rank.

Most plumbing websites have zero backlinks. Or maybe one from the web designer who built the site.

Here's how to get backlinks without paying for them:

  1. Join your local chamber of commerce. They'll link to you from their directory. (We cover more strategies in our backlink building guide.)
  2. Sponsor a little league team. Many leagues have sponsor pages with links.
  3. Get listed on local business directories. Not the spammy ones. The real ones.
  4. Ask suppliers for links. If you're an authorized dealer, they often have dealer locators.

Even 5 to 10 quality local backlinks can make a massive difference for a plumbing website.

Mistake #6: You're Not Using Location Keywords

When someone searches "plumber in Austin TX," Google is looking for pages that mention Austin.

If your website never mentions your city, your neighborhoods, or your service area... how is Google supposed to know where you work?

Here's where to add location keywords:

  1. Page titles: "Drain Cleaning in Austin, TX" not just "Drain Cleaning"
  2. Headlines: "Trusted Water Heater Repair in [Your City]"
  3. Body copy: "We've served the [neighborhood] area for 15 years"
  4. Meta descriptions: Include your city and state
  5. Image alt text: "plumber fixing leak in Austin Texas home"

Don't go crazy and stuff keywords everywhere. That'll get you penalized. But make it clear where you operate. Google needs to know.

Mistake #7: You Never Update Your Website

Google loves fresh content. It's one of the signals they use to determine if a website is active and relevant.

If your website hasn't been touched since 2022... Google notices. And it starts to push you down in favor of sites that are regularly updated.

You don't need to rewrite your whole site every month. But you should:

  1. Add a blog post once or twice a month
  2. Update your service pages with new info
  3. Add new photos from recent jobs
  4. Post seasonal tips (winterization, summer plumbing prep)
  5. Keep your copyright year current (yes, people notice "© 2021")

Even small updates tell Google "this business is alive and active." Which is better than what your competitors are doing.

which is nothing

The Compound Effect

Here's the beautiful thing about fixing these mistakes. They compound.

Fix one and you might move from page 5 to page 3. Fix all seven and you could be on page 1 within 60 to 90 days.

We've seen it happen over and over again. A plumbing business that was invisible online, getting zero calls from their website, suddenly getting 10 to 15 calls a week.

All because they fixed the basics.
